There’s an old way to serve and a new way to serve.

The OLD WAY obligated you to serve because it said so in the scripture.

That’s the way we tended to operate. We told people to evangelize because the Bible says “go into all the world and preach the Gospel.” Case closed.

The Bible said you should do it, so you should do it. Period.

You should tithe because the Bible says “bring all the tithes into the storehouse.” Case closed.

The Bible commands us to tithe. Just do it.

That’s the way it worked: it’s written down so do it.

[NOT so fast.]

On this side of the cross we have the Holy Spirit living in us.

He leads. He guides.

Now we serve, not under obligation, because someone can find a verse, but because the Holy Spirit guides us.

BIG difference!

(and it’s been this way since the first century A.D.)

But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the NEW WAY of the Spirit and not in the OLD WAY of the written code. (Romans 7:6 ESV)
